DVR Staff visit Zebrafish Facility
Summer 2016
HHMI Summer Scholars Program: My lab hosted a pair of high school students, Sonali Khiyani and Wilhelgyne Rose so that they could participate in an eight-week-long research project using zebrafish to understand the role of genes linked to autism in development of the brain. (Summer 2014) Since then, Wilhelgyne has been awarded a Posse scholarship to attend Hamilton College and Sonali will become a University of Miami Cane Fall 2015.

REU Program We participated in an NSF funded Undergraduate Research Experience at the interface of Chemistry and Biological Sciences (PI Marc Knecht). Dr. James N. Wilson in chemistry http://www.as.miami.edu/chemistry/people/faculty/james-n-wilson/ and I are hosted Stephanie Morales-Arroyo as she developed fluorescent neurotransmitter-like molecules to test for bioactivity and localization in the zebrafish larval nervous system.

 Schiley Vertusa-from David Fenster's Coral Creek high school biology class
Day of Science Exploration for Coconut Creek High School English as a Second Language (ESL) students, Howard Hughes Medical Institute teaching laboratories at the University of Miami, Department of Biology, Coral Gables, FL. In collaboration with my colleagues Drs Wikramanayake and Skromne, I engage David Fenster’s Coconut Creek High School ESL students in a day of science exploration. (2010, 2011, 2013, 2014). After the second such science day, Schiley Vertusca stayed on to do a research project in my lab. He is currently a Lombardi and Stamps Fellow at the University of Florida where he majors in Biology and has spent his first summer learning Ecology and Spanish in Merida Mexico as part of his scholarship.
